There are a lot of things that can go wrong when you don’t properly prepare your vehicle for winter, from minor inconveniences like window fogging up to major issues like vehicle failure.

With these automotive tips in mind, you can prepare your vehicle and keep yourself safe all winter long!

Consider Your Tires 🚙

Winter driving is a different experience than summer driving. Wearing the right clothes and following safe driving tips can help prepare you for winter’s weather woes. But safety also extends to your vehicle: tires and brakes, in particular.

The winters in New England present drivers with heavy snow, ice, and slush that can quickly put vehicles in dangerous situations if they’re not prepared. This year, invest in a set of winter tires, or at the minimum new all-season tires.

2) Exterior Wiper Blades ❄

Making sure your car has wiper blades that are in good condition can go a long way toward clearing off windshields and ensuring safety on the road. Wiper blades should be replaced annually or when they start to crack or show signs of wear.

Having proper wiper blades will allow you to see more effectively in the case of a snowstorm, in which safety is paramount.

3) Check the condition of the battery ⚡

Determining the condition of your battery life is important to ensure your vehicle operates at its best during the cold winter months. When was the last time you replaced your battery? Automotive specialists recommend you replace your vehicle’s battery every 3 years.

Ensure that your battery is fully charged and can provide enough current for all of the electrical components on board before heading out in frigid weather.

4) Add rubbing alcohol to wiper fluid ✅

In the event that you’re driving in a winter storm, or experiencing the after effects, it’s essential to be able to see where you are going. Sometimes when we have excess snow or slush on our windshield our wipers try their best but leave streaks which make it increasingly more difficult to see.

Adding rubbing alcohol to your wiper fluid can help accelerate the pace at which the fluid evaporates in colder climates. Consult with your mechanic for guidance on how to do so.

5) Check on car maintenance 🚘

If you live in a colder country region, it’s important to prepare your vehicle for winter. One way to do this is by performing proper car maintenance. These can be things such as oil changes, cabin filter replacements, brake inspections, and more.

Getting these items checked before winter ensures that in the least your car meets the safety expectations and it’s one less thing to worry about.

6) Invest in quality winter floormats 👍

Snow, ice, slush, and more can wreak havoc on your car’s flooring – it only takes one small spill to end up with big problems. If you can’t get away from the snow, make sure you invest in quality winter floormats.

They’ll keep any water or salt from seeping into the carpet and help prevent rust from forming under the mats by trapping moisture. It’s a simple solution that is relatively cheap!

7) Keep an emergency kit in your car ⛑

Having an emergency kit in your vehicle, especially during the winter months is highly recommended. Items can include clothing, blankets, first aid kits, and more. It’s better to have it and not need it than to be caught without it when needed.

In the unlikely event that you are somehow stranded or your car breaks down, this can give you an extra blanket of safety, no pun intended.
